Huinid Hotel in Bariloche

Bariloche, Argentina – Spending Sunday at Ease

Go Chargers!!

Front of the Huinid Hotel, Bariloche, ArgentinaLast night (Sat night), we arrived at the Huinid Hotel about 10pm – this is after our travel adventure yesterday – just outside of Bariloche, Argentina.  Don’t try looking up Huinid in the dictionary because it isn’t there. It’s pronounced (we – need) and is a combination of the names of the daughters of the builder of this place – Winnifred and Inid. We checked into our room – nice and spacious – dropped off the luggage and headed downtown for dinner.

Originally coming into Bariloche towards the Huinid Hotel, we had stopped to ask for directions at an Irish restaurant/pub called Wilhenny’s and JB wanted to go back there for dinner. So, that’s where we went. The interior looked exactly like a mountain hangout/après ski sort of place – big timbers, booths around the edges, a friendly bar.

There were ashtrays on the tables and some people smoking, but not near us and frankly, it wasn’t noticeable after a bit. We ordered red wine plus a chicken ceasar salad and gnocci with a tomato/chicken/cream sauce – both to split. This is a slight upgrade from ham and cheese. The gnocci was terrific.

This very nice meal at Wilhenny’s included the continuing adventure of el cuchillo (knife), la cuchara (spoon) and el tenedor (fork), plus other random vocabulary discoveries and pronunciation corrections courtesy of our young waitress.

Our waitress stared as we requested a doggy box, which ended up in our tiny fridge in the room. We don’t know yet, but this last action may be a capital offense because it confuses the count of the minibar.

We finally went to sleep about 1am with the agreement that we’d sleep until whenever. Then Sunday morning after 9am – bright blue sky, a few white puffy clouds – an alpine landscape. Down to the Huinid Hotel dining room – quick before it closed at 10:30 – for breakfast.

A very nice buffet – $30 pesos each – scrambled eggs (with and without ham), bacon, all kinds of fresh fruit, cereals, about 10 kinds of bread and fresh rolls, croissants, fruit filled pastries, 7 different fruit juices. These buffets all feature small plates the size of a salad plate – to encourage you to take a little, eat it, and then come back for more.  So the dining at the Huinid Hotel is different from the American all-you-can-eat variety with big honking wheelbarrows.

Grounds around the Huinid Hotel, Bariloche, ArgentinaWe went for a short walk around the Huinid Hotel – it’s a hotel plus there are guest houses (think time shares) of varying sizes. We are in the hotel part.

Then we got a tour of the Huinid Hotel spa area – beautiful indoor swimming pool, workout room, many massage and treatment rooms and plans. We took pictures of the pool room – take a peek at the ceramic leaves, flowers and trees that seem to grow out of the beautiful stone work., in a later post.  Very inspirational to a ceramics person!

But, it was time to get out and try to find a laundry. Sure, the Huinid Hotel will do it, but this would double the price of the room. Besides, we needed the adventure of trying to explain what we wanted (to wash our clothes), have them try to remember WHERE in town laundry places were, and then, of course, trying to actually find them.

Grounds around Hotel Huinid, Bariloche, ArgentinaSo – we actually found the first one (it was cerrado [closed]) and the second one turned out to be a dry cleaners. We decide to come back on Monday, and take off driving along the lake – towards the Llao Llao Peninsula – this is a national park all on its own – along the same road as our hotel. [Editor’s note: remember “Llao Llao” is pronounced “sh-a-ow sh-a-ow”, sort of like a retired Charger linebacker, twice.]

A beautiful day for a drive – a two lane road along the shoreline mostly. Tons of small hotels (all alpine looking, much use of logs – rustic, but clean rustic) all along the road. And restaurants and small shops. Think north shore of Lake Tahoe, except greener and more flowers – bright yellow flowering bushes everywhere – I think they are acacia, but am not sure. Will find out today.

View from Hotel Huinid, Bariloche, ArgentinaWe stopped at a roadside restaurant and split a hamburger. It was served with these little potato nuggets (the waiter called them ‘nuts’) but they were like a ball of mashed potato that was then gently deep fried. Oh goodness!

The place had wi-fi so JB read the WordPress blog site help files, and I read a bit. I’m reading Barbara Kingsolver’s ‘The Lacuna’ – it’s set in Mexico – mostly in the household of Diego Rivera (the painter) and his wife Frido Kahlo – very interesting – I haven’t known anything about them before.

On the way back to the Huinid Hotel, we stopped at a “Todo” (“all”) mini-supermarket and stocked up on necessities – basically wine and Oreos. Oh, ok, we got some stuff so we could do some meals on our own or picnic style – ham and cheese for sandwiches, grapefruit juice, mayonnaise in a foil bag (that’s a new one), and a corkscrew.

Then we watched the Charger game using Slingbox – Grounds around Hotel Huinid, Bariloche, Argentinaand we won – thanks to Nate K with a kick at 3 seconds left. Go Chargers!

More pictures of the ceramics around the Huinid Hotel pool, etc to follow. Go to go now.

  1. So, are you just buying all new clothes instead of washing them?

I love it – Oreos and wine… that is what vacation is all about!

  2. Hah! Watched the Chargers win in the Luxor betting area, while Bonnie shopped the Lion King store 🙂 What an ending!! These pictures look a lot like the Pacific Northwest
